The inaugural meeting of Samtök um listamannarekin myndlistarrými (Association of non-profit Visual Art Spaces in Iceland) will be held in Kling & Bang, in the Marshall house at 17:00 Thursday 7th of October. The objective of the association would among other things be supporting and protecting the interests of contemporary non-profit visual art spaces and the artist run scene. Members of the association can be currently operating artist run visual art spaces and initiatives in contemporary art that are not for profit and have an exhibiton program open to the public. The idea is that participation is limited to those spaces that mainly exhibit the work of others than those running the space.

Non-profit visual art spaces are an important part of the Icelandic art scene not least because of the selfless idealistic work that goes into them. That work sometimes becomes the foundation for what larger institutions exhibit later. We think it is important that these grassroot organizations have a platform for dialogue within the scene as well as the opportunity of having a united front to express the needs and experience of the artist run scene where it is needed.

Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir form Kling & Bang, Snæbjörn Brynjarsson from Midpunkt, Sunna Ástþórsdóttir from The Living Art Museum and Gústav Geir Bollason from Verksmiðjan Hjalteyri have prepared the ground and drafted a founding document. The hope is that as many artist run/ non-profit spaces as possbile will attend the meeting and thereby be founding members of the association. It is also possible to attend online.

If you think your space falls into this category we hope you will be able to attend this inaugural meeting as the aim is to include as many spaces as possible into the conversation. Please write to listamannarekin@gmail.com to let us know if you want to join the meeting and to get the draft of the founding document sent. Those who wish to attend online will be sent a link before the meeting.
