The exhibition Nína, Our Dearest Nína is currently on view at the Reykjanesbær Art Museum. Dr. Ynda Eldborg and Viktoría Guðnadóttir have conducted extensive research into the artist's career from a queer perspective. The exhibition features an impressive range of works from a celebrated career, but also documents the hostile reception she encountered in Iceland—an animosity that culminated on New Year’s Eve 1960, when her sculpture The Little Mermaid was blown up and completely destroyed under the cover of darkness.
Gambon’s book offers an in-depth discussion of attacks on artworks throughout art history; we will explore this topic by reading excerpts about the book alongside the materials Ynda and Viktoría have gathered regarding the attack on Nína Sæmundsson’s work. We will also read a short text originally published in newspapers, in which an anonymous author described their involvement in the bombing and attempted to explain their actions—without revealing their identity.
