The Living Art Museum  is seeking an organized and driven general manager to strengthen the museum's internal operations and foster service to the public. This is a 60% position with a deadline for application on November 6.

The Living Art Museum

The Living Art Museum, or Nýló, is one of the oldest artist-run museums and exhibition spaces in Europe. Since its foundation, the museum has been one of the main venues for progressive contemporary art in Iceland. Nýló preserves a unique collection of works by Icelandic and international artists from the 1960s to the present day. Every year, the museum presents a strong exhibition program, as well as being a venue for various events, projects and research, in close cooperation with artists, curators, academics and the public.

General Manager

The General Manager of the Living Art Museum works closely with the curator and the board of the museum and leads the day-to-day operations and organization of the office. The general manager takes care of accounting and payroll, handles contracts with exhibiting artists and other partners, and supervises the museum's interns. The general manager works with the director on fundraising, keeps track of memberships, takes care of the museum's bookstore and ensures that the museum's visitors are received warmly and in a professional manner. The general manager follows the board's decisions in collaboration with other employees and helps when needed with the organization and maintenance of projects run by the museum.

Work environment

Nýló's team is small and works closely together in a creative but hectic environment. Emphasis is placed on a positive attitude, initiative and independent working methods. Attendance is based on the opening hours of the museum’s office (Tuesday-Friday 10—15/16), however, the work comes with a certain degree of flexibility, and variable working hours can be expected between exhibitions and projects.

We are looking for a person who:

— Possesses good organizational skills, is solution-oriented and precise

— Has experience and knowledge of operation within a cultural environment

— Is agile in communication, in speech and writing.

— Can easily express oneself in Icelandic as well as English.

— Has the flexibility to meet and maintain an overview of diverse and different projects at once/at peak times

— Is enthusiastic and hands on, shows initiative and works independently

— Has a keen interest in art, contemporary art and culture

— Has an education that proves useful in the workplace

Application deadline:

Applications are accepted until November 6.

The application should contain a cover letter (1 page) stating the interests, motivation and qualification of the applicant, a CV  as well as contact info for references.

Applications and inquiries should be sent to Sunna Ástthórsdóttir, director of the Living Art Museum, sunna(hjá)nylo.is
