Amanda Riffo has been selected as the Living Art Museum’s Friend of Nýló Artist of the Year 2024.
Amanda has been actively involved in the art scene here and internationally for years, and in March of last year her solo-exhibition at Nýló, House of Purkinje, received well-deserved attention and curiosity. For the exhibition she worked with our inherent awareness towards our visual surroundings and dived beneath the surface of what is right in front of our eyes. The exhibition space was turned into a film set: the scene was an unfinished exhibition, the artworks were nowhere to be found and the game was to find ways to spot the illusion – which ended up being everywhere and the art was to be found entwined in every object, material and packaging. The exhibition was sincere and playful, sharp and critical. Riffo managed to bring the environment of artists and immigrant Icelanders to the forefront, at the same time shining a bright light on the magic of visual arts.
Amanda has created a unique multiple for the museum, entitled Rather Expansive. We invite you to join us on Wednesday, March 20th at 17:00, when the work will be unveiled. Light refreshments will be served. In the work Rather Expansive, Amanda employs similar methods as in her solo exhibition. The work is an exercise, questioning reality and driven by a combination of childlike curiosity and the artist’s need to expose the human-made systems that dominate our daily lives.
Amanda Riffo (b.1977) is a French-Chilean artist based in Reykjavik. After completing a Master of Arts at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, she later participated in exchange programs in Tokyo and Beirut. Her work has been shown in Europe, Japan, Iceland, Chile, Finland, Belgium and more. Exhibition projects in Iceland include her solo exhibition in Open (2018) and Skaftfell ( Seyðisfjörður, 2019), as well as participation in the international art biennial Sequences Xl (2019).
Every year, The Living Art Museum commissions an outstanding artist to create a work in edition, which the friends and patrons of the museum receive in gratitude for their support. Friend artists for previous years are Eygló Harðardóttir, Hreinn Friðfinnsson, Anna Júlía Friðbjörnsdóttir, Unndór Egill Jónsson, Arna Óttarsdóttir, Guðjón Ketilsson and Melanie Ubaldo. The friends of Nýló are a group of people who support the museum’s ambitious exhibition activities. By showing support in action, their contribution is used to strengthen the living environment of contemporary art and further strengthen Nýló's core activities.
