Listamannaspjall og leiktími: Amanda Riffo — House of Purkinje

Welcome to an artist talk with Amanda Riffo, Friday March 24, at 17:00. Amanda will talk about her work at the current exhibition House of Purkinje, where what we see contradicts with what we expect to see. The talk will be in English, and will conclude with a simple game.

House of Purkinje draws parallels between the physiology of the eye and our awareness towards the surrounding environment. It presents an attempt to discuss the professional status and work ethic within the arts, as well as a broader discussion on awareness and the importance of fiction — from a logical view on reality to fantasy. From going into a room where there is nothing to see and into a room where you have to pay attention to everything.

Amanda Riffo (b.1977) is a French-Chilean artist based in Reykjavik. After completing a Master of Arts at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, she later participated in exchange programs in Tokyo and Beirut. Her work has been shown in Europe, Japan, Iceland, Chile, Finland, Belgium and more. Exhibition projects in Iceland include her solo exhibition in Open (2018) and Skaftfell ( Seyðisfjörður, 2019), as well as participation in the international art biennial Sequences Xl (2019).

In her practice, Riffo creates exercises, documents experiments inspired by cognitive science and optics, and all kinds of misunderstandings. Her retinas being radically altered by strong astigmatism, her work has evolved into a permanent questioning of reality. This practice has been reinforced by working for movie sets aside from her studio practice.
