Pressure of the Deep

It is with great pleasure that the board of The Living Art Museum invites you to the opening of the museum’s 40th anniversary exhibition -Pressure of the Deep – on Thursday June 7th, at 6pm.

The Living Art museum was founded in 1978 by artists and is today, one of the oldest artist-run museums and exhibitions spaces with a collection. The collection holds over 2000 works, along with maintaining archives such as the archive of performance art and of artist-run initiatives in Iceland.

In the forty-year history of Nýló over 2500 Icelandic and international artists have come to exhibit or participate in events in the museum.

The Living Art Museum has now reached middle age, and is cause to celebrate!

The artworks that have been selected for this exhibition share strong, but different connotations to our present, then and now. With themes reaching into everyday details, popular culture, tourism or world issues.

The works give visitors multiple perspectives to consider on current events, opening up glimpses into persisting conditions or moments, some slow, others fast. Some works as magnifying glasses, others as telescopes.

A full event program will take place over the course of the exhibition.

The exhibition received generous support from Visual Art Fund, Museum Fund and Centenary of Icelandic independence and sovereignty

Artists include: Atli Heimir Sveinsson, Andreas Brunner, Auður Lóa Guðnadóttir & Starkaður Sigurðarson, Ásgerður Birna Björnsdóttir, Ásta Ólafsdóttir, Björk Guðnadóttir, Daniel Pflumm, Dieter Roth, Douwe Jan Bakker, Edilson, Eirún Sigurðardóttir, Erika MacPherson, Rachel Zolf, Geoffrey Hendricks, Guðrún Einarsdóttir, High Heel Sisters, Hörður Ágústsson, Jóhanna Kristín Yngvadóttir, Jón Gunnar Árnason, Juliane Foronda, Kristín Helga Ríkharðsdóttir, Níels Hafstein, Róska, Rúna Þorkelsdóttir, Saga Sigurðardóttir, Sigurður Guðmundsson, Sólveig Aðalsteinsdóttir, Veigar Ölnir Gunnarsson
